OPEN LETTER
Romani CRISS fiercely condemns the fascist and xenophobic statements of Senator Iulian Urban, Liberal Democratic Party member, posted on his blog www.urbaniulian.ro , on July 25, 2011 and requests his exclusion from the Party in a timely manner.
In an article with neo-Nazi characteristics, entitled “Breivik didn’t commit the attack, but the current EU leaders did!”, Senator PDL Iulian Urban attempts to justify this terrorist act that led to an unprecedented tragedy in post-war history of Norway. Thus, Urban says the guilt doesn’t belong to the person who went out in the street and took 92 lives, but to the European leaders that pushed down multiculturalism on European citizens’ throat.
Senator Urban does not stop to only justifying such unspeakable acts, but in a vile manner, appeals to violence and incitement to discrimination, noting that “in this extreme chaos it is surprising that only one European pulled the trigger to express frustration towards the indifference and hypocrisy of the European political class against Islamization and illegal immigration threatening [as public discourse] the entire civilization and culture”.
In an absolutely revolting manner, Senator Urban presents terrorist acts as acts of justice of the people saying that “if this nation is despised and ignored by the politicians we will end up with people seeking justice by themselves every month, desperate because no one listens to these voices”.
Regarding those expressed by Iulian Urban MP, Romani CRISS emphasizes that the discriminatory and extremist nature of his statements contradicts the current legal provisions in Romania (Constitution, Governmental Ordinance no. 137/2000 on preventing and sanctioning all forms of discrimination, republished), as well as with the international treaties ratified by Romania in the field. [1]
The DL Party senator’s conduct is contrary to their party status showing that the Liberal Democratic Party “aims to respect the universal values of human freedom, respect for traditional values of the Romanian people and justice” (art. 4, para. 1) and has among its objectives “unconditional respect for human dignity, guaranteeing fundamental human rights and freedoms, separation of powers and political pluralism“(art. 5, para. 2 b).
Too many times, these principles remain without application, being merely illusions, unfulfilled promises. We ask the Liberal Democratic Party to prove that the commitments which it voluntarily took towards society throughout their status and exclude Iulian Urban from the party immediately.
We urge the political parties in Romania to sign the Charter of European political parties for a non-racist society and initiate a series of public debates about the usage of racist, xenophobic, homophobic language, and any other type of language that can affect human dignity.
Romani CRISS analyzes the legal steps in order to file a complaint against Senator Urban.
Truly yours,
Margareta Matache
Executive director
